The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care to clients and groups of clients throughout the life span in a variety of settings.

Courses will include content related to the nurse’s role as provider of nursing care, as manager of care, as member of the discipline of nursing, and as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) which is required for practice as a Registered Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics, physicians’ offices, industry, and community agencies.

Students who are waiting admission into the Associate Degree Nursing program may enroll in the General Occupational Technology curriculum.

Randolph Community College's Associate Degree Nursing program is on warning by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and is accredited by the National League for Nursing.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Registered nurses are in very high demand. Career opportunities following registration as an R. N. are varied and numerous. Career opportunities include working a variety of shifts in acute care hospitals; extended or long-term care facilities, mental health facilities, home health, schools, prisons, or physician’s offices. Positions include staff nurse, manager, insurance health coordinator, staff development coordinator, and home health nurse. The job outlook is excellent with opportunities for advancement and specialization. Beginning salaries may range from $34,500 - $36,000.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT FOR LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSES

Licensed practical nurses requesting advanced placement will be granted credit for NUR 110, NUR 120, and NUR 130 under the following conditions
  1. Current unrestricted license as an LPN in North Carolina;
  2. Graduate of an approved practical nurse education program with no grade less than "C” in all nursing classes;
  3. Documentation by supervisor on agency letterhead of at least six months full-time experience within the past 12 months in a position which includes responsibilities representative of the legal scope of practice for LPNs;
  4. Meet admission criteria required of the Associate Degree Nursing program;
  5. Complete with a minimum of “C” BIO 168, BIO 169 and PSY 110;
  6. Successfully complete ENG 111, PSY 150, and SOC 210;
  7. Successfully complete NUR 187 and NUR 189.
 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Qualified LPNs will enter NUR 210 on a space-available basis after readmitted students have been given a space space in the program. Qualified LPNs will be ranked according to the date of application and date of completion of admission requirements.

Students applying for admission to the Associate Degree Nursing program must meet requirements in addition to the general College admission requirements. COURSE INFORMATION

Nursing (Degree - 5 courses) - Topics include legal/ethical aspects of nursing; concepts and principles of adult-child health nursing; administering medications; historic and current issues in nursing. Clinical settings include acute care, ambulatory care, long-term care and home health care.
Biology (Degree - 2 courses) - A comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Concepts of microbiology are also included.
Economics (Degree - 1 course) - This course introduces economic analysis of aggregate employment, income, and prices.
Humanities/Fine Arts (Degree - 1 course) Students are required to take a 3-credit-hour humanities/fine arts course.
English (Degree - 2 courses) - These courses emphasize the writing process and professional communication skills.
Psychology (Degree - 2 courses) - Courses include an introduction to the study of human growth and development and an overview of the scientific study of human behavior.
Sociology (Degree - 1 course) - This course introduces the study of human society, culture, and social interactions.
