The Criminal Justice Technology curriculum is designed to provide knowledge of criminal justice systems and operations. Study will focus on local, state and federal law enforcement; judicial processes; corrections; and security services. The criminal justice system’s role within society will be explored.

Emphasis is on criminal justice systems, criminology, juvenile justice, criminal and constitutional law, investigative principles, ethics and community relations. Additional study may include issues and concepts of government, counseling, communications, computers and technology.

Employment opportunities exist in a variety of local, state and federal law enforcement; corrections; and security fields. Examples include police officer, deputy sheriff, county detention officer, state trooper, intensive probation/parole surveillance officer, correctional officer and loss prevention specialist.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Criminal Justice graduates may work in an office, but most likely will be involved in patrol or investigative activities, much of which will be outdoors. Employment opportunities exist with Department of Corrections, private corporations, and local and state law enforcement agencies. Salary will vary depending on location and organization, with an entry-level range of $20,000 – $35,000.

COURSE INFORMATION

Major Courses

Criminal Justice ( Degree - 14 courses) - Topics include the philosophy and history of criminal justice agencies, law enforcement, and courts and corrections; criminal behavior; the correctional process from law enforcement through the administration of justice, probation, prisons/correctional institutions and parole; the fundamentals of the investigative process; the juvenile justice system; courtroom procedures; ethics and contemporary issues facing the criminal justice practitioner; study of the U.S. Constitution; the origin and history of criminal law compared to modern statutory law; delinquency; theories and practices for intervention, defusing, mediation and referral; law enforcement operations; organization and administration of a criminal justice agency; critical incident intervention and management techniques; relationships of forensic science to criminal investigation; criminal investigations; and investigative writing.
Computer Information Systems (Degree - 1 course) - This course includes an introduction to computers and computing.
Political Science (Degree - 1 course) - This course covers American government.
Spanish (Degree - 1 course) - This course focuses on the fundamentals of Spanish and applied Spanish for the workplace.

General Education Courses

Electives (Degree - 2 courses) - Criminal Justice students are required to take one 3-credit-hour social/behavioral science course and one 3-credit-hour humanities/fine arts course.
English (Degree - 2 courses) - These courses emphasize the writing process and professional communication skills.
Math (Degree - 1 course) - Survey of topics including sets, logic, probability, statistics, matrices, mathematical systems, geometry, topology, mathematics of finance, and modeling.
Sociology (Degree -1 course) – This course introduces the study of human society, culture and social interactions.
