Interior Design label

Day Degree Program [A30220]

The Interior Design curriculum at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, North Carolina, is designed to prepare students for a variety of job opportunities in the field of both residential and nonresidential interior design. The focus of the studies is technical knowledge, professional practices and aesthetic principles.

Curriculum content includes residential and nonresidential interior design, architectural drafting, computer-aided design and universal design. Also included are basic design, history of interiors and furnishings, color theory, products, business practices, graphic presentations and general educational courses.

Graduates should qualify for a variety of jobs including residential and commercial interior design; set design; showroom design; and sales positions for furniture, textiles and accessories; and all businesses dealing with interiors. A certificate in Computer-Aided Drafting is offered in addition to the Interior Design associate degree. Information regarding the certificate option is on the other side of this sheet.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Beginning salaries for Interior Design graduates can range between $24,000 and $28,000. Experienced designers can earn as high as $65,000. The job outlook remains excellent; 85% of our graduates are working in the field. Photography studios, furniture retailers, design studios and architect offices are a few possible employers.

COURSE INFORMATION

Major Courses

Design ( Degree - 17 or 18 courses) - Topics include basic drafting skills and techniques; basic computer-aided design and drafting skills within interior design applications; business practices for interior design; basic principles of design; the study of woven and nonwoven fabrics for interiors; graphic presentation techniques for communicating ideas; skills and techniques directly related to showroom and gallery design for home furnishings and accessories; and an overview of interior design finishing materials and the selection of quality upholstery and case goods. Two courses cover the principles and elements of design including concepts, terminology, color theory, pattern and texture. Other topics include residential design solutions; commercial/contract design; the history of interiors and furnishings; the use of calculations in design; theory and contemporary concepts in lighting; and a capstone course to provide time for areas of special interest.
Art (Degree - 2 courses) - These art history courses cover the development of art forms from ancient times to the present.
Cooperative Education (Degree - 1 course) - This course consists of Interior Design work experience with a college-approved employer.

General Education Courses

Elective (Degree - 1 course) - Students are required to take a 3-credit-hour social/behavioral science course.
English (Degree - 2 courses) - These courses emphasize the writing process and professional communication skills.
Math (Degree - 1 course) - Survey of topics including sets, logic, probability, statistics, matrices, mathematical systems, geometry, topology, mathematics of finance, and modeling.

COMPUTER-AIDED DRAFTING (C30220 Certificate - Day and Evening)

Computer-Aided Drafting is a certificate under the Interior Design Curriculum. This curriculum prepares a student to use a computer with CAD software to create drawings used in a variety of industries. Course work includes computer-aided drafting equipment and software, drafting standards, and math. Graduates of this program will qualify as an entry-level CAD operator. CAD operators are needed in a variety of manufacturing and service industries including machining, furniture, architecture, engineering and related fields.
