The Networking Technology curriculum prepares individuals for employment supporting network infrastructure environments. Students will learn how to use technologies to provide reliable transmission and delivery of data, voice, image, and video communications in business, industry, and education.
Course work includes design, installation, configuration, and management of network infrastructure technologies and network operating systems. Emphasis is placed on the implementation and management of network software and the implementation and management of hardware such as switches and routers.
Graduates may find employment in entry-level jobs as local area network managers, network operators, network analysts, and network technicians. Graduates may also be qualified to take certification examinations for various network industry certifications.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates should qualify for positions such as LAN/PC administrator, microcomputer support specialist, network control operator, communications technician/analyst, network/computer consultant and information systems specialist. Graduates also are prepared to sit for certification exams which can result in industry recognized credentials. Working conditions vary widely depending on area of employment but may include irregular hours (evenings and weekends) and possible overtime. Annual salaries can range from $22,000 - $32,000.
COURSE INFORMATION
Major Courses
Computer Information Technology (Degree - 12 courses) - These courses include an introduction to computers and computing; computer programming and problem solving; business concepts; Internet and Web fundamentals; security concepts; operating systems concepts; database concepts and applications; installation and maintenance of computer hardware; computer training and support techniques; systems analysis and design; and the design and implementation of a systems project. Networking Technology students also study effective network management, configuration and installation; fundamental network administration and system management including advanced enterprise networks; and advanced hardware support and troubleshooting.
Networking Technology (Degree - 5 courses) - Topics include data communication and networking, and introductory through advanced routing and switching.
General Education Courses
Electives (Degree - 2 courses) - Networking Technology students are required to take one 3-credit-hour social/behavioral science course and one 3-credit-hour humanities/fine arts course.
English (Degree - 2 courses) - These courses emphasize the writing process and professional communication skills.
Math (Degree - 1 course) - Survey of topics including sets, logic, probability, statistics, matrices, mathematical systems, geometry, topology, mathematics of finance, and modeling.
